Le premier et le troisième évangile rapportent avec plus de détails la prédication de Jean-Baptiste ; le récit de Marc, plus abrégé que le leur et s'en rapprochant beaucoup dans les termes qu'il emploie, renferme des traits caractéristiques qui lui sont propres.

Ainsi ce mot : en me baissant, (verset 7) qui peint si bien l'humble attitude de Jean devant le Seigneur ; ainsi encore, en annonçant que Jésus baptisera de l'Esprit-Saint, Marc n'ajoute pas : et de feu.

- Cette prophétie de Jean, relative au baptême de l'Esprit-Saint que devait administrer le Sauveur, montre que le précurseur était initié à la nature spirituelle de son règne ; aucun signe extérieur n'en marquera l'avènement ; l'âme fidèle seule reconnaîtra la grandeur de Jésus-Christ au-dessus de tous ses serviteurs et la nécessité absolue de ce baptême de l'Esprit, sans lequel tout resterait mort en elle.
