Le texte reçu, avec Sin., A, C, et la plupart des majuscules ajoute : et prier ; mais les meilleurs critiques omettent, avec B, D, ces mots comme étant transférés ici du Marc 14.38.

- Ici commence l'application de tout le discours, qui se résume, comme on pouvait s'y attendre, dans le saint devoir de la vigilance. Matthieu est le plus complet. Il rapporte d'abord l'exemple de Noé et du déluge, puis la comparaison du père de famille qui veille pour la sécurité de sa maison ; enfin, il couronne ces exhortations solennelles par les paraboles des dix vierges et des talents et par la grande scène du jugement dernier.

Marc abrège ; il se contente de l'image du serviteur vigilant, (verset 34) et insiste sur l'ignorance où Jésus laisse ses disciples concernant le jour et l'heure. (versets 32,33,35)
