Par cette question captieuse, les adversaires ne voulaient pas seulement provoquer une réponse en paroles ou en théorie ; ils s'attendaient à ce que Jésus répondrait en guérissant le malade, (Marc 3.2) Alors ils auraient une raison de l'accuser devant la synagogue ou le tribunal du lieu, non seulement d'avoir enseigné la violation du sabbat, mais de l'avoir violé en fait.
