C'est pourquoi quiconque n'assemble pas avec lui disperse. Ces termes figurés sont empruntés aux travaux de la moisson ; assembler, c'est recueillir. (Comparer Matthieu 3.12 ; 6.26 ; Jean 4.36 où se retrouve le même verbe.)
M. Godet préfère y voir l'image du berger qui rassemble son troupeau. (Jean 10.13-16 ; 11.52)
Ce que les adversaires dispersaient au lieu d'assembler, s'étaient les âmes que Jésus ramenait à Dieu pour les sauver.
- Mais, s'est-on demandé à qui est-ce que Jésus applique ces paroles d'après l'ensemble de son discours ?
Les interprètes ont fait à cette question diverses réponses. Les uns pensent que Jésus veut engager ses auditeurs à s'unir à lui dans la lutte contre Satan, en leur déclarant qu'en présence de cette lutte ils ne peuvent demeurer neutres. D'autres croient que Jésus a en vue les exorcistes juifs, (verset 27) qui faisaient une œuvre opposée à la sienne, aussi longtemps qu'ils ne s'étaient pas unis à lui. D'autres enfin appliquent sa sentence aux pharisiens. (verset 24) Cette opinion est la plus conforme au contexte.
C'est à ses adversaires, en effet, c'est à leur accusation blasphématoire que Jésus répond dans tout ce discours ; c'est à eux qu'il s'adresse directement dans les paroles qui suivent : C'est pourquoi je vous dis. Et en constatant qu'ils étaient contre lui il rompt ouvertement avec eux et sépare sa cause de la leur. Tel était, quant à eux le résultat de son ministère en Galilée, tel il sera encore en Judée. (Matthieu 21.43 et ailleurs.) Mais du reste cette sentence sévère reste vraie en tout temps et en tous lieux, dans son application à tous les adversaires du Sauveur et de son œuvre.
