Voilà le vrai motif du Sauveur. Il rappelle aux disciples le plan divin d'après lequel l'Evangile devait être porté d'abord à la nation israélite, au sein de laquelle l'Eglise devait naître, d'où devait venir le salut. (Jean 4.22)

Il avait interdit à ses disciples d'aller vers les Gentils, (Matthieu 10.5) et toujours même après qu'ils eurent compris l'universalité de l'Evangile, ils suivirent cet ordre en s'adressant d'abord aux Juifs. Le moment des autres nations viendra aussi. (Matthieu 28.19 ; Jean 10.16 ; Ephésiens 2.17)

Jésus obéissait donc à un devoir et il se refusait à accomplir un miracle qui pouvait l'entraîner à une activité qu'il ne voulait pas entreprendre dans cette contrée païenne. Mais il avait enseigné lui-même qu'il est des cas où il faut mettre la charité au-dessus de la loi, (Matthieu 12.3 et suivants) et c'est ce qu'il fera, vaincu par une foi qui provoque son admiration. (verset 28)

Ainsi comme l'observe un théologien éminent (Ewald), Jésus se montre ici deux fois grand : d'abord par sa fidélité à sa vocation, ensuite par sa tendre miséricorde.
