Au premier abord, il parait naturel d'expliquer cette expression venir dans son règne, à la lumière du verset 27, et d'entendre par là le retour final de Christ pour le jugement.
Mais alors il y aurait dans cette promesse une grave erreur de fait qu'on ne saurait attribuer au Sauveur, qui connaissait si bien l'avenir le plus lointain de son règne. De là vient que quelques interprètes ont vu l'accomplissement de cette parole dans la ruine de Jérusalem (d'après le Matthieu 24 : ; comparez Matthieu 10.23), d'autres dans la résurrection de Jésus-Christ, d'autres même dans l'histoire de la transfiguration qui suit. Le plus grand nombre enfin en ont trouvé l'accomplissement dans l'effusion du Saint-Esprit et l'établissement du règne de Christ sur la terre. Et en effet cette vue s'accorde avec les termes dont se servent Marc (Marc 9.1) et Luc (Luc 9.27) pour rendre la même pensée ; l'un dit : "jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient le règne de Dieu venant avec puissance," l'autre, plus simplement encore : "jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient le règne de Dieu."
Or ce règne est venu avec puissance dès la Pentecôte ; il vient sans cesse progressivement, et le retour de Christ n'en sera plus que le couronnement.
Si l'on objecte le mot quelques-uns, attendu que tous les auditeurs de Jésus devaient voir l'accomplissement de cette promesse, c'est là une erreur.
Le règne de Dieu qui s'établit dans les âmes n'est vu que par la foi qui nous y introduit. (Jean 3.3 ; comparez Ie Commentaire de M. Godet sur Luc 9.27)
