- Jésus veut dire : Pourquoi cette question sur ce qui est bon ? Elle est superflue, car tu n'ignores pas qu'un seul est le bon, l'être absolument parfait ; c'est Dieu. Regarde à Dieu, et tu connaîtras le bien qui est sa volonté. Quant à ce que tu dois faire pour entrer dans la vie éternelle, les commandements de la loi te l'enseignent, tu n'as qu'à les garder.
Jésus savait bien que son interlocuteur ne pourrait jamais par lui-même garder ces commandements qu'il vient de lui faire envisager comme l'expression de la volonté sainte de Dieu. Mais c'était la seule réponse possible à sa question ; s'il s'appliquait sérieusement à accomplir cette volonté divine dans son cœur et dans sa vie, il devait se convaincre bientôt qu'il en était incapable ; (Romains 3.20 ; 7.7-13) et, passant par la repentance, il devait chercher la vie éternelle dans une autre voie.
