Le jeune homme riche était sincère en disant qu'il avait gardé toutes ces choses (le texte reçu ajoute : dès ma jeunesse, d'après Marc et Luc) ; car Marc fait observer que Jésus l'aima.

Mais dans son ignorance de la spiritualité et de la sainteté de la loi, il l'interprétait d'une manière toute littérale et extérieure. Dans ce sens, il pouvait avoir raison, et sa parole prouve qu'il s'était sérieusement appliqué à mener une vie morale. Et pourtant il lui reste un vague sentiment qu'il lui manque encore quelque chose, ce qui était déjà impliqué dans sa première question. (verset 16)
