Cette prophétie, le Sauveur lui-même voulut l'accomplir d'une manière littérale ; aussi Jean (Jean 12.15) en marque-t-il également la réalisation dans son récit.

Matthieu la cite librement d'après les Septante et en combinant deux passages des prophètes. Les premiers mots : Dites à la fille de Sion, sont empruntés à Esaïe 62.11. La fille de Sion est un hébraïsme désignant Jérusalem tout entier. La prophétie elle-même est tirée de Zacharie, (Zacharie 9.9) où on lit dans l'hébreu "Tressaille de joie, fille de Sion, pousse des acclamations, fille de Jérusalem ! Voici ton Roi vient à toi, juste et victorieux (ou Sauveur), lui pauvre, et monté sur un âne et sur un ânon, fils d'une ânesse."

Voici maintenant la citation de Matthieu littéralement traduite d'après le vrai texte : "Voici, ton Roi vient à toi, doux et monté sur un âne, et sur un poulain, fils de celle qui est sous le joug," ou d'une bête de somme. Il est évident que, soit dans l'hébreu, soit dans la citation de Matthieu, le mot : et sur un poulain signifie : c'est-à-dire sur un poulain, et l'évangéliste, comme le prophète, n'attribue à Jésus qu'une seule et même monture. Cette remarque est nécessaire pour prévenir un étrange malentendu attribué à Matthieu par une certaine critique dans l'interprétation du verset 7. (Voir la note.)

La pensée du prophète et celle de l'évangéliste, en nous décrivant l'humble monture du Sauveur au moment de son entrée royale à Jérusalem, est clairement indiquée par leurs expressions : ils y voient le signe de la douceur et de l'esprit pacifique, de la pauvreté et de l'abaissement du Messie, au moment même où il aurait pu aspirer à la puissance et à la gloire.
