Cette prophĂ©tie, le Sauveur lui-mĂȘme voulut l'accomplir d'une maniĂšre littĂ©rale ; aussi Jean (Jean 12.15) en marque-t-il Ă©galement la rĂ©alisation dans son rĂ©cit.

Matthieu la cite librement d'aprĂšs les Septante et en combinant deux passages des prophĂštes. Les premiers mots : Dites Ă  la fille de Sion, sont empruntĂ©s Ă  EsaĂŻe 62.11. La fille de Sion est un hĂ©braĂŻsme dĂ©signant JĂ©rusalem tout entier. La prophĂ©tie elle-mĂȘme est tirĂ©e de Zacharie, (Zacharie 9.9) oĂč on lit dans l'hĂ©breu "Tressaille de joie, fille de Sion, pousse des acclamations, fille de JĂ©rusalem ! Voici ton Roi vient Ă  toi, juste et victorieux (ou Sauveur), lui pauvre, et montĂ© sur un Ăąne et sur un Ăąnon, fils d'une Ăąnesse."

Voici maintenant la citation de Matthieu littĂ©ralement traduite d'aprĂšs le vrai texte : "Voici, ton Roi vient Ă  toi, doux et montĂ© sur un Ăąne, et sur un poulain, fils de celle qui est sous le joug," ou d'une bĂȘte de somme. Il est Ă©vident que, soit dans l'hĂ©breu, soit dans la citation de Matthieu, le mot : et sur un poulain signifie : c'est-Ă -dire sur un poulain, et l'Ă©vangĂ©liste, comme le prophĂšte, n'attribue Ă  JĂ©sus qu'une seule et mĂȘme monture. Cette remarque est nĂ©cessaire pour prĂ©venir un Ă©trange malentendu attribuĂ© Ă  Matthieu par une certaine critique dans l'interprĂ©tation du verset 7. (Voir la note.)

La pensĂ©e du prophĂšte et celle de l'Ă©vangĂ©liste, en nous dĂ©crivant l'humble monture du Sauveur au moment de son entrĂ©e royale Ă  JĂ©rusalem, est clairement indiquĂ©e par leurs expressions : ils y voient le signe de la douceur et de l'esprit pacifique, de la pauvretĂ© et de l'abaissement du Messie, au moment mĂȘme oĂč il aurait pu aspirer Ă  la puissance et Ă  la gloire.
