Grec : "pour appeler les appelés aux noces," c'est-à-dire, ceux qui avaient déjà reçu l'invitation d'assister aux noces.

Pour expliquer ce trait, on se réfère généralement à l'usage oriental d'inviter une première fois, quelque temps à l'avance puis une seconde fois, le jour même de la fête. Mais peut-être cette seconde invitation n'a-t-elle lieu, dans la parabole, que parce que les invités tardaient à venir.

Ici, il y a une intention bien arrêtée de refuser. Plus tard, (verset 5) une négligence qui dénote le mépris de l'invitation. Enfin d'autres vont jusqu'à la haine et à la violence ; (verset 6) la même gradation que dans la parabole des vignerons. (Matthieu 21.33 et suivants)
