But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.

Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.

Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

Les phylactères, encore en usage chez les Juifs, sont des bandes de parchemin, sur lesquelles sont écrites des paroles de l'Ecriture, telles que Deutéronome 6.6-9 ; 11.18-21.
Pendant la prière, on les attache au bras gauche ou sur le front, en se fondant sur Exode 13.9 entendu à la lettre. De là vient que les Juifs appellent ces parchemins tephillim, prières.
Ils attachent aussi a ces objets l'idée superstitieuse d'une amulette ou d'un talisman, car phylactère signifie préservatif. Ils les élargissent, dit Jésus, afin d'être plus sûrs encore d'être vus des hommes.
- Quant au terme que nous traduisons par franges, il désigne une espèce de houppe que les Juifs portaient au bord de leurs manteaux, d'après Nombres 15.38,39.
