Dans ce texte, le péché de Pierre est exposé avec exactitude : les Écritures relatent fidèlement tous les évènements !

Une mauvaise compagnie incite à pécher : ceux qui ne peuvent éviter ce type de fréquentation peuvent craindre d'être tentés et pris au piège, comme Pierre. On s'échappe difficilement d'une telle compagnie, sans culpabilité, ni chagrin, voire les deux. Nous commettons une grande faute, quand Christ est pour nous un sujet d’opprobre, et que nous dissimulons aux autres notre connaissance de Sa Personne : en fait, nous sommes appelés à témoigner, sinon nous renions le Seigneur...

Le péché de Pierre a empiré, au cours de cette soirée : l’apôtre a chuté, par surprise, à l’inverse de Judas, qui avait agit avec préméditation.

La conscience doit être pour nous comme le chant du coq : elle nous rappelle les péchés que nous aurions pu oublier. Pierre a été ainsi amené à chuter, afin qu’il minimise sa confiance en lui-même, qu’il soit plus modeste, plus humble, compatissant, et utile pour le service des autres. Cet événement est une bonne leçon pour les croyants qui suivirent, et si les incroyants, les pharisiens, et les hypocrites trébuchent encore, ils sont en péril...

Nous ignorons, si nous étions laissés à nous-mêmes, comment nous agirions en de telles circonstances. Que celui qui pense « tenir ferme », fasse attention de ne pas tomber ! Soyons donc méfiants envers notre propre cœur, et sachons compter totalement sur le Seigneur.

Pierre pleura amèrement. La peine qu'on éprouve pour avoir péché ne doit pas être superficielle, mais grande et profonde. Pierre, étant profondément attristé d’avoir abandonné Christ, ne L'a plus jamais renié ; mais il L'a confessé souvent, face au danger. Une véritable repentance se manifestera par deux éléments opposés : la Grâce et l'engagement ; ce sera le signe que l’affliction de notre péché ne sera pas seulement superficielle, mais sincère.
