Alors il vit que Jésus était condamné, par le fait qu'on le livrait à Pilate. Judas ne s'attendait point à cette condamnation. Connaissant l'innocence de Jésus, il pensait sans doute que ses adversaires se borneraient à lui infliger quelque peine légère, ou que lui-même ferait usage de sa puissance pour anéantir leurs desseins. (Matthieu 26.15, note.)

Mais il ne faudrait pas conclure de ce mot : il se repentit, qu'un changement salutaire s'accomplit dans son cœur. En effet, le verbe ici employé n'est point celui qui désigne une repentance à salut, une sainte douleur d'avoir offensé Dieu, toujours suivie de la régénération du cœur ; (Matthieu 3.2, note) il exprime seulement un regret plein d'angoisses à la vue des suites redoutables d'une action. Pour comprendre la différence, il suffit de comparer la repentance de Judas à celle de Pierre.
