On a supposé que ce théâtre des exécutions criminelles s'appelait ainsi à cause des crânes privés de sépulture qu'on pouvait y voir ; mais il est plus probable que ce nom venait de la forme arrondie de la colline dont il s'agit. On n'a pas encore aujourd'hui, malgré toutes les recherches, acquis de certitude sur la situation topographique de Golgotha.

L'emplacement traditionnel, marqué par l'église du Saint-Sépulcre que l'impératrice Hélène fit construire au commencement du quatrième siècle, est actuellement dans la ville.

Ceux qui défendent cette donnée de la tradition pensent qu'au temps de Jésus le mur d'enceinte suivait du nord au sud le tracé de la rue de Damas pour tourner brusquement à l'ouest dans la direction de la porte de Jaffa. Le Calvaire aurait été situé dans cet angle rentrant (F. Bovet, Voy. en Terre-Sainte, p. 209 et suivants).
