Ce verset clôt le développement versets 8 à 15, en revenant à l'idée du verset 8, celle du deuil provoqué par la captivité. Le prophète s'adresse à Sion (la terre personnifiée, comme à la mère du peuple (les fils qui font tes délices).

Arrache..., coupe... C'était, en dépit de la défense Deutéronome 14.1, l'usage de se raser entièrement la tête, et spécialement le devant de la tête, en signe de grand deuil (Job 1.20 ; Esaïe 15.2).

Comme le vautour : il s'agit du vultur percnopterus, ou vautour d'Egypte, très commun en Egypte et en Syrie, et qui a le front et le sommet de la tête complètement nus.

Ils s'en vont... Le peuple entier étant emmené en exil, Sion reste seule, pleurant ses enfants déportés. Comparez Esaïe 3.26.

Le prophète n'a pas en vue dans ce tableau telle ou telle invasion en particulier, mais toute la série des châtiments dans lesquels s'est consommée la punition d'Israël.
