1 à 5 Les injustices des grands, punies par la perte de leur héritage, c'est-à-dire de la terre de Canaan.

Ce discours de menaces s'adresse spécialement aux hautes classes de la capitale. C'est elles qui donnent au reste du peuple l'exemple des péchés dont le prophète, qui habite à Jérusalem, est le témoin indigné. C'est donc de Juda qu'il s'agit surtout dans tout ce qui suit.

Mallheur à ceux qui... Comparez le discours analogue Esaïe 5.8 et suivants, qui censure les mêmes crimes, si souvent rappelés par les prophètes.

Trois degrés dans le développement de leur injustice : ils emploient la nuit, le temps de la méditation tranquille, Psaumes 4.5, à méditer par quelles manœuvres criminelles ils dépouilleront les petits de leurs biens ; puis à préparer les moyens d'exécution (trament) ; enfin, à peine le jour luit, qu'ils exécutent hâtivement les crimes projetés. Ils font donc le mal non par entraînement, mais de propos délibéré ; et rien ne les arrête, car ils ont pour dieu leur bras, c'est-à-dire qu'ils ne connaissent pas de puissance supérieure à leur propre force et n'ont d'autre loi que leur volonté. Malheur à ceux qui projettent le mal durant la nuit, et qui se lèvent tôt afin de mettre leurs plans à exécution ! Il n'est pas bien de commettre le mal, mais il est pire, de le faire avec préméditation.

Il est très important d’employer de manière judicieuse le temps qui nous est alloué, quand nous sommes en retraite. Si la convoitise règne en notre cœur, la compassion du Seigneur en est bannie ; quand nous empruntons ainsi la voie du péché, la violence et la fraude sont hélas fréquentes...

Les personnes qui sont fières de leur prospérité sont en général celles qui chancellent le plus rapidement, face à l'adversité. Malheur à ceux dont Dieu se détourne ! Il n’y a pas de pire calamité que d’être séparé de l'église et de la présence divine, avec la perte de tous les privilèges que cela implique...
