Prends la verge : celle avec laquelle Moïse avait fait tous ses miracles en Egypte (Exode 17.5). Elle devait avoir été déposée dans le Tabernacle (verset 9) et elle y était restée inactive pendant les années de jugement, durant lesquelles Dieu n'était pas intervenu directement dans les affaires du peuple. En tout cas il ne faut pas la confondre avec celle qui avait fleuri comme emblème du sacerdoce d'Aaron (17.8).

Le voyageur Rowlands décrit ainsi la localité d'Aïn-Kadès :
Il y a là un rocher massif, complètement isolé, formant l'avant-mont de la montagne qui s'élève au nord ; ce rocher, absolument nu, est le seul visible dans toute la contrée. J'admirai le torrent qui en sort et qui, au bout de quatre cents pas, se perd dans le sable. Dans tout le désert je n'ai rien trouvé d'aussi charmant que ce courant d'eau excellente. Les Bédouins le nomment Kudès et Aïn-Kadès (source de Kadès).

En voyant tarir cette source qui l'avait abreuvé depuis si longtemps, le peuple était tombé dans une grande perplexité.

Au rocher : à celui qui se trouvait là, dans le voisinage. Il existe une légende rabbinique d'après laquelle ce rocher serait le même que celui qui avait fourni de l'eau au peuple à Réphidim (Exode 17.6) et qui l'aurait accompagné de station en station pendant tout le voyage au désert. Il est possible que Paul fasse allusion à cette légende, mais en la spiritualisant (1Corinthiens 10.4).
