Nombres 24.19

Et celui qui sortira de Jacob dominera, et il fera périr de la ville le résidu.

Une domination. Cette forme abstraite est reproduite dans la prophétie d'Abdias contre Edom, où il est dit (verset 21) que des libérateurs venant de Sion jugeront la montagne d'Edom.

Dans les villes. Il y a proprement : des villes. Il retranche des villes ceux qui s'y sont réfugiés après la perte de la bataille ; comparez Abdias 1.9 : Afin que tout homme soit retranché de la montagne d'Esaü par le massacre. Cet oracle se rapporte évidemment à la personne de David et à sa dynastie. La lutte avec Edom avait commencé sous Saül. David, avec l'aide de son général Joab, conquit tout le pays (2Samuel 8.14). Après bien des péripéties de révoltes et d'assujettissements répétés, le peuple édomite finit par être incorporé à Israël. Les Moabites avaient été soumis par Saül et David (1Samuel 14.47 ; 2Samuel 8.2) ; ils s'unirent aux Chaldéens lors de la ruine de Jérusalem (Jérémie 27.3, note), mais ils finirent par être conquis par les Maccabées, puis par les Romains.
