Le jour où... Cette consécration des premiers-nés à Dieu est une des lois caractéristiques du peuple d'Israël (comparez Exode 34.19-20) ; elle ne se rencontre chez aucun autre peuple de l'antiquité. Il est bien fait mention parfois de l'immolation du fils aîné chez les païens ; mais ce sacrifice est envisagé comme le plus douloureux que l'homme puisse offrir, et non comme la conséquence d'un droit spécial de la divinité sur les premiers-nés. Cette consécration des fils premiers-nés était en rapport naturel avec les lois sur les prémices, qui attribuaient à Dieu, comme seul auteur de toute prospérité, les premiers produits du sol. Mais les premiers nés israélites étaient consacrés à Dieu à un nouveau titre, en raison du grand souvenir historique rappelé ici.
