World English Bible My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God's law, I will also forget your children.

6 à 10 On pourrait appliquer ce passage au peuple entier ; il faudrait admettre, dans ce cas, que le sacerdoce, dont il est parlé verset 6, désigne la dignité d'Israël comme peuple de sacrificateurs (Exode 19.6). Cependant, ce sens paraßt bien forcé ; et comme les versets 8 et 9 s'adressent expressément à la classe des sacrificateurs proprement dits, il paraßt plus naturel d'appliquer à ceux-ci le passage entier dÚs le verset 6.

Les sacrificateurs Ă©taient les vĂ©ritables auteurs de cette ignorance dans laquelle le peuple Ă©tait plongĂ©. Les sacrificateurs des dix tribus n'Ă©taient point ceux de la famille d'Aaron, seuls lĂ©gitimes. Les rois d'IsraĂ«l les avaient Ă©tablis de leur propre chef, et cela, de nom du moins, pour servir l'Eternel. Ces prĂȘtres intrus sont menacĂ©s d'aprĂšs la loi du talion d'un double chĂątiment : l'un qui frappera leur personne, ils seront rejetĂ©s du sacerdoce ; l'autre qui frappera celle de leurs enfants.

Les prĂȘtres et le peuple ont tous rejetĂ© la connaissance de la vĂ©rité ; il est alors normal que Dieu les rejette. Ils ont oubliĂ© la loi de Dieu, nĂ©gligĂ© de la garder Ă  l'esprit et manquĂ© de la transmettre Ă  leur postĂ©rité ; il est logique qu'en consĂ©quence Dieu les oublie, eux et leurs enfants.

Si nous déshonorons Dieu, par notre manque de révérence, Celui-ci, tÎt ou tard, nous couvrira de honte.

Au lieu de mettre en garde le peuple contre le pĂ©chĂ©, et l'inciter Ă  la pratique des sacrifices, pour bien montrer l'offense faite Ă  Dieu, les prĂȘtres conduisaient le peuple dans l'iniquitĂ©, sans l'exhorter Ă  l'expiation. Il est relativement malsain de se rĂ©jouir du pĂ©chĂ© des autres car cela peut se retourner contre nous. On ne peut jouir en toute quiĂ©tude de ce qui est gagnĂ© malhonnĂȘtement. Le peuple et les prĂȘtres s'endurcissaient dans le pĂ©ché ; ils mĂ©ritaient, en pure logique, leur punition. Ceux qui pratiquent ensemble le pĂ©chĂ© doivent s'attendre Ă  partager une ruine commune. Toute convoitise du cƓur finira un jour ou l'autre par extirper la force et la vigueur. C'est pour cette raison que certains professeurs sont si ennuyeux, si peu attrayants, enseignant vainement la religion. Ils sont attirĂ©s par leur propre convoitise, ce qui Ă©loigne leur cƓur de leur sujet d'enseignement.
