If there is therefore any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,
2
make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;
3
doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
4
each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
5
Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
6
who, existing in the form of God, didn't consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7
but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8
And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
9
Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;
10
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
11
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13
For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.
14
Do all things without murmurings and disputes,
15
that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
16
holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn't run in vain nor labor in vain.
17
Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.
18
In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.

But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.
20
For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.
21
For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.
22
But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.
23
Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.
24
But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.
25
But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need;
26
since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.
27
For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
28
I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,
30
because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

L'humilité et la grandeur du Christ

Le Christ vous rend plus forts. Son amour vous donne du courage et son Esprit vous unit. Vous êtes pleins de tendresse et de pitié les uns pour les autres. C’est vrai, n’est-ce pas ?

Eh bien, remplissez-moi de joie en vous mettant d’accord. Ayez un même amour, un même cœur, une même pensée.
3
Ne faites rien pour passer devant les autres ou pour que les autres vous admirent, cela ne vaut rien. Au contraire, soyez simples et pensez que les autres sont meilleurs que vous.
4
Ne cherchez pas votre intérêt à vous, mais cherchez l’intérêt des autres.
5
Entre vous, conduisez-vous comme des gens unis au Christ Jésus.
6
Lui, il est l’égal de Dieu, parce qu’il est Dieu depuis toujours. Pourtant, cette égalité, il n’a pas cherché à la garder à tout prix pour lui.
7
Mais tout ce qu’il avait, il l’a laissé. Il s’est fait serviteur, il est devenu comme les hommes, et tous voyaient que c’était bien un homme.
8
Il s’est fait plus petit encore : il a obéi jusqu’à la mort, et il est mort sur une croix !
9
C’est pourquoi Dieu l’a placé très haut et il lui a donné le nom qui est au-dessus de tous les autres noms.
10
Alors tous ceux qui sont dans le ciel, sur la terre et chez les morts tomberont à genoux quand ils entendront le nom de Jésus.
11
Et tous reconnaîtront ceci : Jésus-Christ est le Seigneur, pour la gloire de Dieu le Père.

C’est pourquoi, amis très chers, obéissez à Dieu comme vous l’avez toujours fait. Obéissez-lui, non seulement quand je suis là, mais encore plus maintenant que je suis absent. Avec un grand respect pour Dieu et en tremblant, travaillez pour être sauvés.

Dieu travaille en vous et il vous rend capables de vouloir et de faire les actions qui lui plaisent.
14
Faites tout sans vous plaindre et sans discuter.
15
Ainsi vous serez innocents, on n’aura rien à vous reprocher. Vous serez des enfants de Dieu sans défaut, au milieu de gens malhonnêtes et mauvais. Parmi ces gens-là, vous brillez comme des lumières dans le monde,
16
parce que vous apportez la parole de vie. Le jour où le Christ viendra, je pourrai être fier de vous. Et, on le verra bien : je n’aurai pas travaillé pour rien, je ne me serai pas fatigué pour rien !
17
Mon sang, c’est-à-dire ma vie, sera peut-être ajouté comme une offrande au sacrifice que votre foi présente à Dieu. Pourtant, cela me rend heureux, et je me réjouis avec vous tous.

Vous aussi, soyez heureux et réjouissez-vous avec moi !
Timothée et Épaphrodite
19
Le Seigneur Jésus me fait espérer que je pourrai bientôt vous envoyer Timothée. Ainsi j’aurai des nouvelles de vous, et elles me donneront du courage.
20
En effet, à part Timothée, personne ne porte les mêmes soucis que moi, personne ne s’occupe vraiment de vous.
21
Tous cherchent leur intérêt, et non celui de Jésus-Christ.
22
Mais vous le savez, Timothée a montré ce qu’il valait. Il a travaillé avec moi au service de la Bonne Nouvelle, comme un fils auprès de son père.
23
Donc, c’est lui que j’espère vous envoyer dès que je verrai clair dans ma situation.
24
Et le Seigneur me rend sûr d’une chose : je vais bientôt venir chez vous, moi aussi.
25
Pourtant, je pense qu’il faut vous renvoyer Épafrodite. C’est mon frère. Il travaille et combat avec moi, et vous l’avez envoyé pour me servir quand j’en avais besoin.
26
Il désire beaucoup vous revoir tous et il est inquiet parce que vous avez appris sa maladie.
27
Oui, il a été malade et bien près de mourir. Mais Dieu a eu pitié de lui, et pas seulement de lui, mais de moi aussi. Alors il m’a évité une tristesse encore plus grande.
28
C’est pourquoi je me dépêche de vous le renvoyer. Ainsi, quand vous le verrez, vous serez de nouveau dans la joie, et moi, je serai moins triste.
29
Recevez-le avec grande joie comme un frère chrétien. Respectez beaucoup les gens comme lui,
30
parce qu’il a vu la mort de près en travaillant pour le Christ. Il a risqué sa vie pour me rendre service quand vous ne pouviez pas le faire vous-mêmes.

Si donc il y a quelque consolation en Christ, s’il y a quelque soulagement dans la charité, s'il y a quelque communion d'esprit, s'il y a quelques cordiales affections et quelques compassions,

Rendez ma joie parfaite, étant d'un même sentiment, ayant un même amour, n'étant qu'une même âme, et consentant [tous] à une même chose.
3
Que rien ne se fasse par un esprit de dispute, ou par vaine gloire ; mais que par humilité de coeur l’un estime l'autre plus excellent que soi-même.
4
Ne regardez point chacun, à votre intérêt particulier, mais [que chacun ait égard] aussi à ce qui concerne les autres.
5
Qu'il y ait donc en vous un même sentiment qui a été en Jésus-Christ.
6
Lequel étant en forme de Dieu, n'a point regardé comme une usurpation d'être égal à Dieu.
7
Cependant il s'est anéanti lui-même, ayant pris la forme de serviteur, fait à la ressemblance des hommes ;
8
Et étant trouvé en figure comme un homme, il s'est abaissé lui-même, et a été obéissant jusques à la mort, à la mort même de la croix.
9
C'est pourquoi aussi Dieu l'a souverainement élevé, et lui a donné un Nom, qui est au-dessus de tout Nom ;
10
Afin qu'au Nom de Jésus tout genou se ploie, tant de ceux qui sont aux cieux, que de ceux qui sont en la terre, et au-dessous de la terre,
11
Et que toute Langue confesse que Jésus-Christ est le Seigneur, à la gloire de Dieu le Père.

C'est pourquoi, mes bien-aimés, ainsi que vous avez toujours obéi, non seulement comme en ma présence, mais beaucoup plus maintenant en mon absence, employez-vous à votre propre salut avec crainte et tremblement.
13
Car c'est Dieu qui produit en vous avec efficace le vouloir, et l'exécution, selon son bon plaisir.
14
Faites toutes choses sans murmures, et sans disputes ;
15
afin que vous soyez sans reproche, et purs, des enfants de Dieu, irrépréhensibles au milieu de la génération corrompue et perverse, parmi lesquels vous reluisez comme des flambeaux au monde, qui portent au devant d'eux la parole de la vie.
16
Pour me glorifier en la journée de Christ de n'avoir point couru en vain, ni travaillé en vain.
17
Que si même je sers d'aspersion sur le sacrifice et le service de votre foi, j'en suis joyeux ; et je m'en réjouis avec vous tous.
18
Vous aussi pareillement soyez-en joyeux, et réjouissez-vous-en avec moi.
Timothée et Épaphrodite
19
Or j'espère [avec la grâce] du Seigneur Jésus de vous envoyer bientôt Timothée, afin que j'aie aussi plus de courage quand j'aurai connu votre état.
20
Car je n'ai personne d'un pareil courage, et qui soit vraiment soigneux de ce qui vous concerne.
21
Parce que tous cherchent leur intérêt particulier, et non les intérêts de Jésus-Christ.
22
Mais vous savez l'épreuve [que j'ai faite] de lui, puisqu'il a servi avec moi en l'Evangile, comme l'enfant sert son père.
23
J'espère donc de l'envoyer dès que j'aurai pourvu à mes affaires.
24
Et je m'assure en [notre] Seigneur que moi-même aussi je vous irai voir bientôt.
25
Mais j'ai cru nécessaire de vous envoyer Epaphrodite mon frère, mon compagnon d'oeuvre et mon compagnon d'armes, qui aussi m'a été envoyé de votre part pour me fournir ce dont j'ai eu besoin.
26
Car aussi il désirait ardemment de vous voir tous, et il était fort affligé de ce que vous aviez appris qu'il avait été malade.
27
En effet il a été malade, et fort proche de la mort ; mais Dieu a eu pitié de lui, et non seulement de lui, mais aussi de moi, afin que je n'eusse pas tristesse sur tristesse.
28
Je l'ai donc envoyé à cause de cela avec plus de soin, afin qu'en le revoyant vous ayez de la joie, et que j'aie moins de tristesse.
29
Recevez-le donc en [notre] Seigneur, avec toute [sorte de] joie ; et ayez de l'estime pour ceux qui sont tels que lui.
30
Car il a été proche de la mort pour l'oeuvre de Christ, n'ayant eu aucun égard à sa propre vie, afin de suppléer au défaut de votre service envers moi.
