Abraham..., Isaac..., Jacob. Une promesse divine, renouvelée à l'égard de trois générations successives, est le fondement le plus inébranlable sur lequel puisse s'appuyer un peuple.

Son serment à Isaac. Il s'agit du serment que Dieu fit à Morija, au moment du sacrifice d'Isaac (Genèse 22.16). Bien que l'Eternel s'engageât alors envers Abraham, le serment concernait aussi Isaac, qui s'était livré sans résistance pour le sacrifice ; d'ailleurs il fut confirmé plus tard à ce dernier (Genèse 26.3).
