34 et 35

Ils ne détruisirent point..., ils se mêlèrent. Les deux choses n'en font en réalité qu'une. Ils ne pouvaient laisser subsister les Cananéens sans se mêler à eux, et le faire, c'était prendre parti pour l'idolâtrie contre Dieu ; voir Deutéronome 7.2, note.

Le cheminement des Israélites en Canaan et la réaction divine vis à vis de leur trajet, nous montrent que la voie du péché ne mène qu'à la chute ; les omissions finissent par générer les problèmes : quand le peuple négligea sa séparation d'avec les païens, il finit par pratiquer leurs œuvres.

Un péché conduit vers beaucoup d'autres, et cela provoque les jugements divins. Les enfants d'Israël ont subi les conséquences punitives de leurs égarements. Les pécheurs se voient souvent ruinés par ceux qui les conduisent vers le mal.

Satan, le tentateur, sera un bourreau. À la longue, Dieu montre Sa Miséricorde envers le peuple, à cause de Sa fidélité et de Ses promesses. L'immuabilité de la nature divine en ce qui concerne l'amour et la grâce pour son peuple, transforme Sa justice en miséricorde ; la repentance divine ne change pas.

Notre cas est terrible quand l'on considère l'église ici-bas. Tandis que les nations professent être chrétiennes tout en étant aussi fautives que nous, il ne faut pas se demander pourquoi le Seigneur les abaisse au niveau de leur péché. À moins qu'il n'y ait une repentance générale et profonde, il n'y a pas d'autre espoir de voir ces calamités augmenter.

Le psaume conclut par une prière pour une délivrance complète du peuple de Dieu, pour un renouveau spirituel. Que tous les peuples de la terre puissent tendre vers ce but, Amen.

      55 "But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will harass you in the land in which you dwell.

      Deutéronome 7

      36 The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
