Un dieu (Elohim). Les Septante, suivis par l'auteur de l'épître aux Hébreux, (Hébreux 2.7) traduisent : Tu l'as fait un peu moindre que les anges. Il se peut que le terme d'Elohim, qui est un pluriel (voir Genèse 1.1, note), désigne ici, dans la pensée du psalmiste, les êtres célestes, Dieu et les anges, en opposition à l'homme. Les anges, considérés indépendamment de Dieu, sont parfois appelés fils de Dieu (Job 1.6 ; 2.1) ; mais, à l'exception de Psaumes 82.6, qui applique le nom de dieux à ceux qui exercent la justice, le terme d'Elohim désigne toujours exclusivement la personne de Dieu. David veut dire sans doute que l'homme a été placé sur la terre comme le représentant de Dieu. C'est ce qu'il développe dans ce qui suit.
