Celui qui habite... La traduction littérale serait :

Assis dans la retraite secrète du Très-Haut,
Il est logé à l'ombre du Tout-Puissant...

C'est là une sorte de titre, semblable à ceux que nous avons trouvés Psaumes 87.1 ; 90.1, et qui fait entendre déjà dans toute sa pureté la note du psaume. On dirait un motif musical. qui va être développé dans la suite en de riches variations.

La retraite secrète... Nous conservons l'adjectif secrète, que suppriment les nouvelles traductions, par ce que l'hébreu séther désigne un endroit ou l'on est caché à tous les regards.

A l'ombre du Tout-Puissant. Ce second stiche ne forme pas, ainsi que plusieurs l'ont cru, une vaine tautologie avec le premier. Le fidèle ne se contente pas d'être à l'abri dans une retraite secrète, même dans la plus inaccessible à l'ennemi, celle du Très-Haut : il a besoin de se tenir sous la protection personnelle du Tout-Puissant lui-même.

Celui qui, par la foi, considère Dieu comme son protecteur, trouvera en Lui tout ce dont il a besoin, tout ce qu'il désire. Et ceux qui ont trouvé le réconfort en prenant le Seigneur comme refuge, espèrent que les autres feront la même démarche. La vie spirituelle est immunisée des tentations de Satan, éloignée de ses pièges, par la grâce divine ; elle est également protégée des actions néfastes du péché qui sont un véritable poison. Une grande sécurité est promise aux croyants au sein du danger. La sagesse et la foi les garderont de toute frayeur excessive et sans cause, au milieu du danger.

Quels que soient les évènements qui nous entourent, rien n'est fait sans que la volonté de notre Père soit accomplie ; nous n'avons aucune raison d'avoir de la crainte. Le peuple de Dieu verra, non seulement les promesses de Dieu s'accomplir, mais aussi Ses menaces.

Que les pécheurs viennent au Seigneur miséricordieux, par le biais du Rédempteur ; encourageons les autres également à placer leur confiance en Lui.
