Romains 1.1-23

Le mot : "tous ceux qui sont à Rome..." élargit le cercle des destinataires de l'épître : ce ne sont pas seulement les chrétiens d'origine païenne nommés au verset 6, mais aussi des Juifs de naissance.

Ils sont saints en vertu de l'appel qui leur a été adressé, grec saints appelés, comme, à verset 1, Paul se disait "apôtre appelé".

- "L'appel n'est pas le fruit de la sainteté, mais la sainteté est le fruit de l'appel." Augustin.

- Les croyants sont saints parce que, arrachés au monde par la vocation divine qu'ils ont acceptée, ils sont devenus la propriété de Dieu (saint, en hébreu, signifie mis à part, consacré, comparez Exode 19.6 ; 2.14 ; 1Pierre 2.9), et parce que la vie nouvelle qu'ils ont reçue de Dieu, est un principe indestructible de sanctification qui finira par triompher en eux de tout mal. (Colossiens 3.12 ; 2Thessaloniciens 1.10 ; Hébreux 3.1 ; 6.10)

- La salutation épistolaire usitée chez les Grecs, et placée après les noms de l'auteur et du destinataire de la lettre, était : "Réjouis-toi !" Par cette formule les païens ne souhaitaient à leurs amis qu'une joie terrestre et charnelle. (Jacques 1.1, 3e note)

Les chrétiens, pour qui toutes les relations de la vie humaine étaient envisagées au point de vue de l'éternité et pénétrées de l'Esprit d'en haut, souhaitaient à leurs frères la grâce, l'amour de Dieu manifesté aux pécheurs, source du pardon, de la sainteté, de la victoire sur la mort, et le fruit de cette grâce, la paix ; la paix avec Dieu, la paix du cœur assuré de son salut, la paix avec les hommes.

Ces deux mots grâce et paix se retrouvent toujours dans l'ordre où nous les avons ici. (1Corinthiens 1.3 ; 2Corinthiens 1.2 ; Galates 1.3 ; Ephésiens 1.2 ; Philippiens 1.2 ; Colossiens 1.2 ; 1Thessaloniciens 1.1)

- La grâce et la paix nous sont données de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ : nous n'avons d'autres titres aux dons de Dieu que la médiation et les mérites de notre Sauveur.
