Grec : En justice à tout croyant, pour lui servir de justice, pour lui procurer gratuitement la justice.

Ce verset indique la raison (car) pour laquelle les Juifs ne pouvaient parvenir à la justice par la pratique des œuvres légales : Christ est la fin de la loi.

Les uns restreignent ce terme de loi à la loi mosaïque, d'autres l'étendent à tout le régime légal, auquel le païen lui-même était astreint par sa conscience, quand il cherchait à se sauver en obéissant à "la loi écrite dans son cœur." (Romains 2.14-16)

Comme il est question spécialement des Juifs, (verset 3) on peut se demander si le sens du mot loi n'est pas limité à la législation donnée par Moïse. La même question se pose dans Romains 3.19-21 (voir les notes).

La fin peut signifier le but. C'est à Christ que tend toute l'économie légale, par ses symboles, ses types, ses commandements destinés à préparer les cœurs à recevoir Christ, en faisant naître en eux le sentiment du péché et le besoin du salut. La loi est "un pédagogue pour nous conduire à Christ." (Galates 3.24)

Mais l'ensemble de notre passage, et surtout le complément : (grec) en justice à tout croyant, font plutôt penser que l'apôtre prend le mot fin dans le sens "d'abolition :" la loi a fini son ministère elle n'a plus de rôle à jouer dans l'acquisition du salut, dès l'instant où Christ apporte un nouveau moyen de justification, qui est offert à la foi. Jésus lui-même a enseigné (Luc 16.16) que la loi était une institution préparatoire et temporaire qui devait prendre fin à l'avènement du royaume de Dieu.

Le pouvoir de la loi et son ministère de condamnation cessent totalement pour ceux qui ont recours à la grâce. Paul oppose cette grande vérité à l'erreur Juive du salut car les œuvres, qui crée la propre justice ; (verset 3) puis il fera ressortir, dans versets 5-13, le contraste entre l'économie de la loi et le nouveau moyen du salut, la justice de la foi.

Mais Christ n'est la fin de la loi que pour le croyant, pour celui qui, par la foi, saisit la vraie justice et réalise, par une sanctification toujours plus complète, ce que la loi ordonne, mais ne peut donner.
