Avec ce verset, Paul aborde une sorte de conclusion (donc) fondée sur la vue de la bonté et de la sévérité de Dieu : celles-ci sont invoquées comme motifs d'une exhortation à la vigilance, adressée aux gentils, (verset 22) puis l'apôtre exprime l'espoir de la réintégration des Juifs. (versets 23,24)

- Grec :, d'après Sin., B, A, C, etc. : vois donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu : envers ceux qui sont tombés, il y a sévérité ; mais envers toi, bonté de Dieu. Quelques témoins du texte omettent le complément de Dieu.

Paul invite les gentils, objets de la bonté de Dieu, à persévérer dans cette bonté s'ils ne veulent pas, eux aussi, être retranchés.

Cette exhortation, et la menace sur laquelle elle s'appuie, prouvent que, si l'élection divine donne l'assurance du salut, elle n'en laisse pas moins subsister la responsabilité de l'homme, à tous les degrés de la vie chrétienne.

Quand il s'agit de réveiller les âmes et de leur inspirer une crainte salutaire, Paul ne se laisse pas arrêter par les conclusions que l'on peut tirer de sa doctrine de l'élection, (Romains 8.29-39) par ce que l'on a appelé l'inadmissibilité de la grâce. S'il paraît se mettre ainsi en contradiction avec lui-même, il compte sur l'expérience chrétienne pour réduire à l'unité cette antinomie. (Philippiens 1.12,13)

De tous les jugements, ceux qui sont d’origine spirituelle sont les plus douloureux à subir : c'est de ceux-ci que l'apôtre parle ici. La restauration du peuple juif est, dans le cours vraisemblable des évènements, bien plus probable que « l'appel des païens » à devenir les enfants d'Abraham ; bien que d'autres (les nations) possèdent maintenant les privilèges spirituels d’Israël, cela n'empêchera pas ce dernier d’être admis de nouveau auprès de l’Éternel !

En repoussant l'évangile, et par leur refus indigné à le prêcher aux païens, les Juifs sont devenus « ennemis » de Dieu ; ils doivent cependant être encore favorisés par égard envers leurs pères, vivant précédemment dans la piété. Néanmoins, pour le présent, Israël, par sa haine à l’encontre des païens, est encore opposé à l'évangile ; mais quand le « temps imparti par Dieu » sera venu, ce qui ne saurait tarder, Son Amour initial envers les pères du peuple juif sera bien présent !

La Grâce véritable ne cherche pas à confiner la faveur de Dieu. Ceux qui bénéficient de Sa Miséricorde, doivent s'efforcer de La partager, afin que d'autres en bénéficient aussi. Il ne s’agit pas de restaurer les Juifs dans leur précédent sacerdoce, avec les sacrificateurs, le temple, et leurs diverses cérémonies : tout cela est désormais terminé ; mais ils doivent être « conduits » à croire en Christ, le véritable Messie, Celui qu'ils ont crucifié, pour devenir membres du « troupeau des rachetés », avec les païens, Jésus étant le Grand Berger !

Les captivités d'Israël, sa dispersion, et son « rejet » de l'église, sont d’excellents pôles d’enseignements pour les croyants, en vue de leur éviter la pratique du mal ; la vigilance continuelle du Seigneur envers Israël, Sa Miséricorde finale à son égard et la restauration bénie* des Juifs, témoignent bien de la Patience et l'Amour de Dieu !

* Remarque du traducteur : l’auteur, à la date de rédaction de ce commentaire, (dix-septième siècle) ne savait pas que l’état d’Israël allait naître en mai 1948 !
