Romains 11.25

J’aimerais, chers frères, vous confier un secret resté caché jusqu’ici, afin que vous ne persistiez pas dans l’erreur en croyant tout savoir. Une sorte d’endurcissement est tombé sur une partie d’Israël. Ils sont devenus insensibles au message de Dieu et le resteront jusqu’au jour où le nombre total de tous les peuples (destinés à entrer en possession du salut) sera complet.

Paul introduit, avec solennité, par une allocution directe, destinée à en marquer l'importance (frères, je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez), l'énoncé d'un fait à venir qu'il qualifie de mystère.

Cet enseignement confirme (car) ses déductions précédentes.

Un mystère, dans le langage de Paul, n'est pas un fait ou une vérité incompréhensibles de leur nature. Ce terme sert à désigner tout ce que l'homme ne peut connaître que par une révélation spéciale de Dieu mais qui, une fois révélé, est accessible à l'intelligence humaine : ainsi, la vocation des gentils ; (Romains 16.25 ; Ephésiens 3.3) de même ici, la conversion de tout Israël. (comparez Colossiens 2.2 ; 1Corinthiens 15.51 ; 1Thessaloniciens 4.15 ; 1Timothée 3.16)

L'apôtre parle, avec une autorité prophétique et une grande assurance, de ces mystères que l'Esprit de Dieu a dévoilés à l'Eglise. Il ne dit pas, comme dans Ephésiens 3.3, que ce soit à lui personnellement que ce mystère a été révélé. Il semble plutôt communiquer aux Romains une révélation déjà reçue par d'autres. Peut-être cette révélation remonte-t-elle à quelque prophétie de Jésus lui-même.

- Paul communique ce mystère aux Romains, afin, leur dit-il, que vous ne soyez pas sages à vos propres yeux, ou, suivant la variante de B, A, : en vous-mêmes ; en d'autres termes, que vous ne présumiez pas de votre sagesse, ou que vous ne cherchiez point à découvrir la vérité par les simples réflexions de votre intelligence, en vous livrant à des spéculations oiseuses. Il n'est pas probable que l'apôtre fasse encore allusion à l'orgueil qui portait les gentils à mépriser les Juifs. (verset 18 et suiv :)

- Le mystère révélé, c'est que l'endurcissement a atteint (grec est arrivé à) une partie d'Israël, jusqu'à ce que la plénitude des gentils soit entrée.

Le terme d'endurcissement désigne une action que Paul attribue à Dieu. (verset 7, note)

- Ce qu'il a exposé dans versets 1-10, montre dans quel sens cet endurcissement a atteint (grec) en partie Israël. Il durera jusqu'à ce que la plénitude des gentils soit entrée.

La plénitude des gentils, c'est leur nombre plein, complet, toutes les nations du monde, et, sinon tous leurs représentants individuels sans exception, du moins leur grande masse. Il est arbitraire de limiter cette plénitude au nombre total des élus ; notre passage ne renferme aucune allusion à l'élection individuelle. Cette plénitude des nations doit entrer dans l'Eglise, dans l'alliance de grâce.

      20 In that day there will be on the bells of the horses, "HOLY TO YAHWEH"; and the pots in Yahweh's house will be like the bowls before the altar.

      4 I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them.
