Ratifié par Dieu à Abraham. (Voir verset 15) Le texte reçu ajoute ici : "ratifié envers Christ ou à l'égard de Christ." Ces mots, non authentiques, devaient, dans la pensée du correcteur, reproduire l'idée du verset16.

Paul applique ici sa comparaison du verset 15 et argumente du fait déjà indiqué au commencement de verset 16. Ainsi :

1° on n'annule pas un testament authentique ; (verset 15)

2° il a été donné à Abraham par la promesse ;

3° cette promesse ne peut être annulée par la loi, venue si longtemps après.

- En rappelant les 430 ans pendant lesquels les Israélites furent en Égypte, (Exode 12.40) depuis les dernières promesses réitérées à Jacob jusqu'à la loi, l'apôtre n'entend point observer une chronologie rigoureuse, mais exprimer seulement par ce chiffre connu le long intervalle écoulé entre la promesse et la loi : celle-ci ne pouvait en aucune façon annuler celle-là.
