The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

Jésus explique l'image qui précède : c'est du cœur que procèdent les sources de la vie, c'est-à-dire le bien ou le mal.

Le texte reçu avec A, C, majuscules répète, dans le second membre de la phrase, le mot du premier : mauvais trésor de son cœur, qui exprime bien l'idée dont il s'agit.

- Matthieu, qui n'a pas ces paroles dans le sermon sur la montagne, les reproduit ailleurs. (Matthieu 12.35)

Les paroles, et d'une manière générale tous les actes que nous accomplissons, procèdent du cœur. Ici cette pensée se rattache encore à l'avertissement donné à l'homme qui a la prétention d'enseigner son frère. (versets 41,42)

Dans Matthieu (Matthieu 12.34) la même sentence se retrouve, mais appliquée à des hommes qui abusaient de la parole pour blasphémer contre le Saint-Esprit.

Il est un grand nombre de ces sentences courtes et pénétrantes que Jésus dut prononcer à plus d'une reprise.
