Je sifflerai. C'est le signal du retour pour le peuple des dix tribus (comparez Esaïe 5.26 ; 7.18).

Je les rassemblerai : de l'exil.

Nombreux autant qu'ils l'ont été. Le temps de la gloire apparaît donc en ce moment comme un temps complètement passé. Comment un prophète aurait-il parlé ainsi au temps où le royaume des dix tribus subsistait encore ? A quelque époque, sans doute, que l'on place cette prophétie sur le peuple des dix tribus il n'est pas facile d'en montrer l'accomplissement. Car une grande partie de ce peuple paraît s'être fondue avec les populations païennes au milieu desquelles il avait été déporté. Nous avons déjà traité de cette difficulté à la fin d'Osée et montré que cette promesse avait reçu un commencement d'accomplissement soit dans le rétablissement de la population galiléenne, soit dans le retour d'un certain nombre d'Israélites avec les membres de la tribu de Juda, qui revinrent en Judée et rebâtirent Jérusalem et le temple. Mais les termes du prophète paraissent avoir une portée plus générale et plus lointaine encore, quoiqu'il ne soit pas possible d'expliquer comment les restes des dix tribus pourront encore jouer un jour le rôle qui leur est promis. Cette prophétie relative à Ephraïm rentre dans la promesse de saint Paul : Tout Israël sera sauvé. Romains 11.26.
