On se rappelle que sur la tiare qui couvrait le front du grand sacrificateur était fixée une plaque d'or portant cette inscription : Sainteté à l'Eternel. Le caractère de sainteté, qui était l'essence de la religion juive, soit quant à l'idée de Dieu lui-même, soit quant à la destination de son peuple, était ainsi formulé de la manière la plus solennelle en la personne du représentant le plus auguste de la nation juive, quand il paraissait devant Dieu. Le prophète nous montre cette inscription reproduite sur l'objet le plus futile en apparence de la vie ordinaire. Par là, il veut évidemment dire que le même esprit de sainteté qui préside aux moments les plus solennels de la vie, pénétrera à cette époque-là les actes en apparence les plus frivoles de l'existence terrestre. C'est dire que tous les éléments naturels de la vie humaine seront non seulement exempts de souillure, mais marqués du sceau de la consécration positive à Dieu, sans distinction ni d'actes ni de moments.
