Chapitre 10.

1 à 14 Danger d'une fauuse liberté, prouvé par l'histoire d'Israël.

Grec : (d'après le texte reçu) : "Or, frères," (et selon une variante plus sûre) : "car, frères..."

Par cette particule, l'apôtre lie ce chapitre à celui qui précède, et surtout à 1Corinthiens 8 dont il est le développement. Là il a traité des rapports des chrétiens avec les idolâtres, relativement aux sacrifices et aux choses offertes sur les autels du paganisme.

A 1Corinthiens 9 il a montré, par divers traits de sa propre conduite, l'utilité qu'il y a à savoir renoncer à ses droits, afin d'éviter d'autant plus sûrement une liberté charnelle qui conduit au péché. Poursuivant ici le cours des mêmes pensées, qui étaient si importantes pour l'Eglise de Corinthe, entourée de dangers au sein de cette ville opulente et voluptueuse, il va puiser dans l'histoire d'Israël d'effrayants exemples des péchés auxquels ce peuple fut entraîné par cette fausse liberté dont il nourrissait son orgueil.

Tour à tour, il se livra à l'idolâtrie, (verset 7) à l'impureté ; (verset 8) il tenta Dieu ; (verset 9) il murmura, (verset 10) malgré les grâces et les merveilles dont il avait été l'objet de la part de Dieu, et que l'apôtre rappelle d'abord. Après quoi Paul applique à ses lecteurs ces exemples qu'il appelle des types, parce qu'il y voit un sens spirituel et symbolique.

Afin de dissuader les Corinthiens de céder à l’idolâtrie, et de les écarter de toute conduite coupable, l'apôtre cite l'exemple de la nation juive, au temps de Moïse. Les Juifs ont traversé miraculeusement la Mer Rouge, alors que les Égyptiens qui les poursuivaient, furent noyés. Il s’agissait en fait, d’une allégorie du baptême.

La manne, par laquelle ils furent nourris, était une image de Christ crucifié, le Pain descendu du ciel : celui qui en mange vivra à jamais !

Christ est le Roc sur lequel l'église chrétienne est bâtie ; de toutes les sources d’eau qui en jaillissent, les croyant se désaltèrent et sont rafraîchis. C’est encore une image des bénédictions spirituelles du Saint-Esprit, accordées aux enfants de Dieu, par l’intermédiaire de Christ !

Qu’aucun enfant de Dieu n’abuse des grands privilèges spirituels et de la Vérité dont il dispose ; cela pourrait nuire à sa félicité céleste.
