Je ferai, à présent, quelques recommandations à ceux parmi vous qui sont responsables de l’Eglise. Je leur parle en tant que responsable comme eux et témoin des souffrances du Christ, moi qui ai aussi part à la gloire qui va être révélée.

Chapitre 5.

1 à 11 Exhortations aux anciens, aux jeunes ges, à tous.

Voir sur la charge d'ancien Actes 11.30 ; Philippiens 1.1, 1Timothée 3.1 et suivants ; 1.5,7 notes.

Pierre prend ce titre par humilité, bien que son apostolat lui donnât plus d'autorité que n'en avaient les anciens.

"Il fait lui-même ce qu'il va recommander aux autres, en traitant de collègues ses inférieurs mêmes. Il agit avec eux, non en usant de commandement comme un maître, mais en priant et exhortant comme un frère." Quesnel.

On s'est demandé de quel droit Pierre prend le titre de témoin des souffrances de Christ, lui qui avait renié son Maître pendant qu'il était condamné et ne l'avait pas suivi au Calvaire.

Mais il avait été témoin des souffrances de Jésus pendant son ministère (Luc 22.28,29) et au commencement de sa passion, (Matthieu 26.36-67) et sa chute n'empêcha pas que Jésus lui-même ne l'investit de cet office de témoin, (Actes 1.8) qui est inséparable de celui d'apôtre ; (Actes 1.21-22) et dans la suite il s'en acquitta fidèlement. (Actes 3.15)

Tout son ministère est dans ce titre, de même que toute son espérance repose sur les souffrances de Christ, grâce auxquelles aussi il est (grec) participant de la gloire qui doit être révélée.

Dans la mesure où l'on a part aux souffrances de Christ, on peut espérer d'avoir part à sa gloire. (Comparer 1Pierre 4.13, note)

Dans ce texte, l'apôtre Pierre n'ordonne pas, mais il exhorte, il ne cherche pas à gouverner tous les dirigeants d’églises, ni ces dernières. Pierre, comme d’autres apôtres, fut particulièrement honoré d'avoir été témoin des souffrances de Christ ; les véritables chrétiens auront le privilège de participer à la gloire céleste qui sera révélée.

Les pauvres chrétiens de l’époque, dispersés et souffrants, faisaient néanmoins partie du troupeau céleste, ils étaient rachetés pour Dieu par le grand Berger ; ils vivaient dans un amour saint et dans la communion fraternelle, selon la volonté divine. Ils sont également « héritiers » de Dieu ; ils sont mis à part, choisis, pour faire partie de Son propre peuple, pour bénéficier de Sa faveur et pour se consacrer à Son service.

Christ est le Berger, le chef du troupeau et « l’héritage » entier de Dieu. Tous Ses fidèles serviteurs recevront une couronne de gloire, qui ne peut flétrir et infiniment plus précieuse et plus honorable que toute l'autorité, la richesse et les plaisirs de ce monde !
