Se dit à lui-même. Cette parole est remarquable. Ce n'est pas Dieu qui lui parle ainsi. Le prophète Gad lui avait recommandé au contraire de demeurer en Juda. Mais, fatigué de cette vie de dangers constants et de détresse perpétuelle, David suit sa propre pensée et se crée à lui-même les difficultés d'une position fausse.

Je périrai. Il aurait dû se souvenir des promesses divines.

L'incrédulité est un péché qui nous assaille facilement, même ceux qui pratiquent le bien, qu'ils soient en pleine quiétude ou dans la crainte ; il est parfois difficile de faire face à ce péché. « Seigneur, affermis notre foi » !

Nous pouvons rougir, en voyant dans ce texte, que la parole d'un Philistin était plus représentative que celle d'un Israélite, et que la ville de Gath pouvait être un refuge pour un homme de bien, à l'inverse des villes d'Israël. David s'établit confortablement, non seulement à une certaine distance de Gath, mais aussi aux confins d'Israël, d'où il pouvait entretenir une certaine correspondance avec ses propres compatriotes.
