Ne revinrent plus... pendant un certain temps ; et quand ils revinrent plus tard (9.16 ; 10.5 ; 13.6 et suivants), l'Eternel, agissant par Samuel, ne permit pas que leur domination redevint ce qu'elle avait été précédemment. L'état des choses avait changé depuis la victoire d'Ebénézer. L'Ecriture emploie souvent des expressions qu'il ne faut pas prendre dans un sens absolu. Comparez 2Rois 6.23-24 ; Jean 3.32-33.

Durant ce grand réveil des enfants d'Israël, l'arche n'a pas, malgré tout, été ôtée de Silo, ni placée à proximité du tabernacle. Cette négligence face aux institutions du Lévitique révélait à quel point la signification typique de l'arche s'était estompée dans le cœur des Hébreux ; quand cette dernière se retrouva chez eux, elle fut l'objet d'un service vide de sens, comparé au comportement normal que le peuple aurait dû avoir. Le repentir, la foi, l'amour de Dieu et du prochain, auraient dû être alors leur règle de vie !

      15 There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling.
      16 The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away, and scattered.

      5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died with him.
      6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together.
      7 When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.
