1 Timothée 1.17

Ce chant de louange, auquel l'apôtre donne essor en finissant, a le même motif et le même sens que celui de Romains 11.32 et suivants

C'est un regard sur le merveilleux décret de Dieu, de sauver le pécheur par sa pure et libre grâce, qui arrache à l'âme de Paul ces hymnes d'adoration. Ici, il donne à Dieu des attributs qui tous ont un rapport profond avec cette œuvre de sa grâce : il le nomme Roi des siècles, ou "des éternités," parce qu'avant tous les âges il a tout préparé dans le conseil de sa miséricorde pour se glorifier, par le salut des pécheurs, jusque dans l'éternité ; incorruptible (non immortel, selon nos versions), parce que les desseins de son amour sont invariables, et que ses promesses ne trompent jamais ; invisible, parce que, "habitant une lumière inaccessible de gloire," (1Timothée 6.16) ses voies sont insondables ; (Romains 11.33) seul Dieu (le texte reçu lit seul sage, contre les meilleures autorités), parce que nul ne peut s'opposer à sa volonté, et qu'il restera le souverain bien de ses enfants, tout en tous.

L'apôtre se montre jaloux de donner à Dieu seul toute la gloire, et il redouterait de s'en attribuer la moindre partie.

- Après avoir exposé ainsi les trésors de l'Evangile, il presse son disciple de combattre pour cette vérité divine, en lui mettant sous les yeux l'exemple de ceux qui se perdent en la falsifiant.
