Par cette antithèse dans les mots : "la loi est bonne si quelqu'un en use légitimement," l'apôtre veut dire que la loi atteint son but quand l'homme pénètre jusqu'à son essence même, et la saisit dans sa profonde spiritualité, quand il en éprouve la sainte influence, quand il est amené par elle à la connaissance de son péché et de sa corruption. (Romains 7.7,10,14, notes.)

Le Sauveur faisait appel à cet usage de la loi quand il y renvoyait ses auditeurs et leur disait qu'ils auraient la vie s'ils pouvaient l'accomplir. (Luc 10.28 ; 18.20 et suivants ; comparez Romains 10.5, note.)

Mais la loi cessait d'être bonne quand elle devait servir à de vaines spéculations, et surtout lorsque, interprétée dans un sens extérieur et matériel, à la manière des pharisiens, elle ne servait plus qu'à nourrir l'illusion d'une orgueilleuse propre justice. (Voir Matthieu 19.20)
