L'exercice corporel ce sont ces macérations du corps qu'enseignaient les faux docteurs. (1Timothée 4.3, note.) Non seulement elles servent à peu de chose, parce qu'elles ne changent pas le cœur, d'où tout dépend dans la vie chrétienne, mais elles peuvent devenir très pernicieuses dès qu'elles nourrissent la propre justice et éloignent les âmes de la justification par la foi, du salut par grâce.

Il en est tout autrement de certains renoncements nécessaires, dictés par une vraie piété. Paul lui-même nous enseigne, par son exemple, à "traiter durement le corps" (1Corinthiens 9.27)

Mais ce ne sont là que des moyens qui n'ont aucune valeur en eux-mêmes ; le but est le développement de cette piété (1Timothée 4.7) qui renferme tout pour le chrétien, puisqu'elle est pour lui, dès cette vie, la source de la paix avec Dieu, et dans la vie à venir, d'un bonheur parfait. (Comparer, sur l'ensemble de ce passage, Romains 14.17)
