Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance; and he joined affinity with Ahab.

After certain years he went down to Ahab to Samaria. Ahab killed sheep and cattle for him in abundance, and for the people who were with him, and moved him to go up with him to Ramoth Gilead.

Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me to Ramoth Gilead?" He answered him, "I am as you are, and my people as your people. We will be with you in the war."

Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Please inquire first for the word of Yahweh."

Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, "Shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?" They said, "Go up; for God will deliver it into the hand of the king."
6
But Jehoshaphat said, "Isn't there here a prophet of Yahweh besides, that we may inquire of him?"
7
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil. He is Micaiah the son of Imla." Jehoshaphat said, "Don't let the king say so."
8
Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, "Get Micaiah the son of Imla quickly."
9
Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, and they were sitting in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.
10
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'With these you shall push the Syrians, until they are consumed.'"
11
All the prophets prophesied so, saying, "Go up to Ramoth Gilead, and prosper; for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king."

The messenger who went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, "Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth. Let your word therefore, please be like one of theirs, and speak good."

Micaiah said, "As Yahweh lives, what my God says, that will I speak."
14
When he had come to the king, the king said to him, "Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?" He said, "Go up, and prosper. They shall be delivered into your hand."
15
The king said to him, "How many times shall I adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of Yahweh?"
16
He said, "I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. Yahweh said, 'These have no master. Let them return every man to his house in peace.'"
17
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?"
18
Micaiah said, "Therefore hear the word of Yahweh: I saw Yahweh sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
19
Yahweh said, 'Who shall entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?' One spoke saying in this way, and another saying in that way.
20
A spirit came out, stood before Yahweh, and said, 'I will entice him.' "Yahweh said to him, 'How?'
21
"He said, 'I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' "He said, 'You will entice him, and will prevail also. Go forth, and do so.'
22
"Now therefore, behold, Yahweh has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets; and Yahweh has spoken evil concerning you."
23
Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, "Which way did the Spirit of Yahweh go from me to speak to you?"
24
Micaiah said, "Behold, you shall see on that day, when you shall go into an inner room to hide yourself."
25
The king of Israel said, "Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son;
26
and say, 'Thus says the king, "Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace."'"
27
Micaiah said, "If you return at all in peace, Yahweh has not spoken by me." He said, "Listen, you peoples, all of you!"

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.
29
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but you put on your robes." So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into the battle.
30
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying, "Fight neither with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel."
31
It happened, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, "It is the king of Israel!" Therefore they turned around to fight against him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and Yahweh helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
32
It happened, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.
33
A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of the chariot, "Turn your hand, and carry me out of the army; for I am severely wounded."
34
The battle increased that day. However the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot against the Syrians until the evening; and about the time of the going down of the sun, he died.

Josaphat eut richesse et gloire en abondance. Il s’allia par mariage avec Achab.
2
Au bout de quelques années, il descendit auprès d’Achab à Samarie, et Achab sacrifia pour lui et pour le peuple qui était avec lui, une grande quantité de petit et de gros bétail. Il l’incita à monter à Ramoth en Galaad.

Achab, roi d’Israël, dit à Josaphat, roi de Juda : Iras-tu avec moi à Ramoth en Galaad ? Josaphat lui répondit : (Oui), moi comme toi, et mon peuple comme ton peuple, (nous irons) au combat avec toi.

Puis Josaphat dit au roi d’Israël : Consulte maintenant, je te prie, la parole de l’Éternel.
5
Le roi d’Israël rassembla les prophètes, au nombre de quatre cents, et leur dit : Irons-nous au combat vers Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je m’en abstenir ? Ils répondirent : Monte, et Dieu la livrera entre les mains du roi.
6
Mais Josaphat dit : N’y a-t-il plus ici aucun prophète de l’Éternel, par qui nous puissions le consulter ?
7
Le roi d’Israël répondit à Josaphat : Il n’y a plus qu’un seul homme par qui l’on pourrait consulter l’Éternel ; mais je le déteste, car il ne prophétise rien de bon sur moi, (il ne prophétise) jamais que du mal : c’est Michée, fils de Yimla. Josaphat dit : Que le roi ne parle pas ainsi !

Alors le roi d’Israël appela un eunuque et dit : Fais venir tout de suite Michée, fils de Yimla.
9
Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, siégeaient chacun sur son trône, revêtus de leurs habits (royaux) ; ils siégeaient sur l’aire à l’entrée de la porte de Samarie, et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.
10
Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s’était fait des cornes de fer et dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Avec cela tu donneras des coups aux Syriens jusqu’à leur extermination.
11
Tous les prophètes prophétisèrent de même, en disant : Monte à Ramoth en Galaad ! Tu auras du succès, et l’Éternel la livrera entre les mains du roi.

Le messager qui était allé appeler Michée lui parla ainsi : Voici que les prophètes sont unanimes pour dire du bien au roi ; que ta parole s’accorde avec la leur : tu diras du bien !
13
Michée répondit : L’Éternel est vivant ! Ce que dira mon Dieu, je l’annoncerai.
14
Lorsqu’il fut arrivé auprès du roi, le roi lui dit : Michée, irons- nous au combat vers Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je m’en abstenir ? Il répondit : Montez ! vous aurez du succès, et ils seront livrés entre vos mains.
15
Mais le roi lui dit : Combien de fois me faudra-t-il te faire jurer de ne me dire que la vérité au nom de l’Éternel ?
16
(Michée) répondit : J’ai vu tout Israël Disséminé sur les montagnes, Comme des brebis qui n’ont point de berger. Et l’Éternel dit : Ces gens n’ont pas de seigneurs, Que chacun retourne en paix dans sa maison !
17
Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat : Ne te l’ai-je pas dit ? Il ne prophétise sur moi rien de bon, mais seulement du mal.
18
Alors Michée dit : Eh bien, oui, écoutez la parole de l’Éternel ! J’ai vu l’Éternel siégeant sur son trône, et toute l’armée des cieux se tenant à sa droite et à sa gauche.
19
L’Éternel a dit : Qui séduira Achab, roi d’Israël, pour qu’il monte à Ramoth en Galaad et qu’il y tombe ? Ils répondirent l’un d’une manière, l’autre d’une autre.
20
Alors un esprit sortit, se tint devant l’Éternel et dit : Moi, je le séduirai. L’Éternel lui dit : Comment ?
21
Je sortirai, répondit-il, et je deviendrai un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes. L’Éternel dit : Tu le séduiras et tu réussiras bien à le séduire : sors et fais ainsi !
22
Et maintenant, voici que l’Éternel a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tes prophètes que voici ; et l’Éternel a décrété un malheur contre toi.
23
Alors Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s’approcha, frappa Michée sur la joue et dit : Par quel chemin l’Esprit de l’Éternel est-il sorti de moi pour te parler ?
24
Michée répondit : Tu le verras bien, le jour où tu iras de chambre en chambre pour te cacher.
25
Le roi d’Israël dit : Prenez Michée et emmenez-le vers Amôn, chef de la ville, et vers Joas, fils du roi.
26
Vous direz : Ainsi parle le roi : Mettez cet homme en prison et ne lui donnez que la portion congrue de pain et d’eau, jusqu’à ce que je retourne en paix.
27
Michée dit : Si tu retournes vraiment en paix, l’Éternel n’a point parlé par moi. Il dit encore : Écoutez, vous tous, peuples !
Le roi Achab est tué au combat
28
Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, montèrent vers Ramoth en Galaad.
29
Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat qu’il se déguisait pour aller au combat ; mais toi (dit-il), revêts-toi de tes habits (royaux). Ainsi le roi d’Israël se déguisa, et ils allèrent au combat.
30
Le roi de Syrie avait donné cet ordre aux chefs de ses chars : Vous n’attaquerez ni petit ni grand, mais vous attaquerez seulement le roi d’Israël.
31
Quand les chefs des chars aperçurent Josaphat, ils dirent : C’est le roi d’Israël. Ils l’entourèrent pour l’attaquer. Josaphat appela au secours, et l’Éternel le secourut : Dieu les repoussa loin de lui.
32
Les chefs des chars, voyant que ce n’était pas le roi d’Israël, s’éloignèrent de lui.
33
Alors un homme tira de l’arc au hasard et frappa le roi d’Israël au défaut de la cuirasse. Le roi dit au conducteur du char : Tourne bride, et fais-moi sortir du champ de bataille, car je suis blessé.

Le combat devint acharné ce jour-là. Le roi d’Israël dut être maintenu debout dans son char en face des Syriens jusqu’au soir et il mourut vers le coucher du soleil.
