Avait cherché à les frapper. Il avait formé le plan de les anéantir (verset 5) et avait déjà commencé l'exécution de ce dessein.

Du reste des Amorrhéens. Ce nom est pris ici dans le sens tout à fait général dans lequel il comprenait toutes les tribus idolâtres habitant le pays de Canaan avant l'arrivée des Israélites, et par conséquent aussi celle des Héviens, à laquelle appartenaient les Gabaonites d'après Josué 9.7.
