Qu'on nous livre sept hommes de ses fils, et nous les mettrons en croix devant l'Eternel, au coteau de Saül, l'Elu de l'Eternel. Et le Roi leur dit : Je vous les livrerai.

Sept hommes : le nombre sacré qui convient au caractère sacré d'une telle réparation.

Devant l'Eternel : au nom duquel le serment a été contracté et qui doit le faire respecter.

A Guibéa de Saül : la ville natale du meurtrier.

L'élu de l'Eternel. Ce titre étonne dans la bouche des Gabaonites. On a proposé une légère correction du texte, par laquelle le sens serait : Sur la montagne de l'Eternel (verset 9). Mais peut-être les Gabaonites veulent-ils faire contraster la dignité, de Saül avec l'indignité de sa conduite, pour mieux justifier la réparation qu'ils réclament.

Je les livrerai. On a soupçonné que David avait voulu profiter de cette occasion pour se débarrasser d'une partie des membres de la famille de Saül qui le gênait. Rien ne justifie ce soupçon. Ce n'est pourtant pas lui qui avait déchaîné la famine et suggéré aux Gabaonites la réparation qu'ils exigent.
