Cette parole est certaine ; (comparez 1Timothée 1.15 ; 2.1) il faut suivre Jésus-Christ en toutes choses, et jusque dans ses souffrances et dans sa mort, pour parvenir là où il est, dans la vie du ciel et dans son règne glorieux, auquel il veut associer ses rachetés. Aucun autre chemin n'y conduit que celui qu'il a suivi lui-même.

Ainsi, par humiliation à la gloire, par la mort à la vie, telle est la devise du chrétien. (Comparer Romains 6.18, note ; Romains 8.17, note ; Galates 2.20, note ; Colossiens 1.24, note ; Philippiens 3.10, note.)

Il faut remarquer encore sur ces paroles :

1° Que le moyen de mourir (à nous-mêmes, au monde, au péché) c'est de souffrir, et tel peut être le fruit béni de la souffrance.

2° Qu'ici le verbe mourir est au passé (aoriste), ce qui suppose que le disciple de Jésus est déjà entré avec Christ dans la communion de ses souffrances et de sa mort. Nos anciennes versions effacent cette nuance.

3° Que tous ces verbes sont composés de la particule avec, sans le mot lui, qui est dans la pensée de l'apôtre, mais qu'il n'exprime pas. (2Timothée 2.10)

4° Qu'à cause de l'élan et du rythme de ces paroles, plusieurs exégètes y voient une partie d'une hymne ou cantique de l'Eglise.

Matthieu 10.33 ; comparez Matthieu 7.23 ; Luc 13.25-27. Quiconque, en entendant de telles paroles, n'éprouve pas un saint tremblement, n'a jamais compris ou jamais cru ce qu'elles renferment ! Cette sentence est juste l'opposée des deux précédentes.
