Edom n'aurait pas dû se joindre aux païens qui ont envahi Juda. Car le jour du châtiment va fondre sur ceux-ci. Sur le jour de l'Eternel, comparez Joël 1.15, note, et Joël 3.2,9-16.

Il y a évidemment corrélation entre le jour de l'Eternel et le jour du malheur de Juda. Celui-ci est pour Juda un temps de purification, en même temps que de châtiment. Mais celui-là est pour les ennemis de Dieu un jugement final, une complète destruction.

Comme tu as fait : à Israël. En ce jour-là, Edom commencera par être détruit par les païens (versets 1 à 9) ; après cela ceux-ci courront à leur propre ruine.

De même que vous avez bu... Edom et les nations ont festoyé ensemble autour du temple, le jour de la prise de Jérusalem, et profané ainsi la montagne de l'Eternel.

Les nations boiront. Après avoir vidé la coupe de la débauche, elles boiront celle de la colère de Dieu (comparez Habakuk 2.16 ; Lamentations 4.21 ; Jérémie 25.15-16,27-28), et cela jusqu'à en être anéanties.

Elles seront comme n'ayant pas été. Il y aura sans doute des individus qui ne périront pas, les réchappés dont parle Joël 2.32 ; mais les nations, comme telles, comme puissances hostiles à Dieu, n'existeront plus.
