Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3
Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them.
4
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.
5
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under the sky.
6
When this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language.
7
They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Behold, aren't all these who speak Galileans?

How do we hear, everyone in our own native language?

Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia,
10
Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11
Cretans and Arabians: we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of God!"

They were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, "What does this mean?"
13
Others, mocking, said, "They are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke out to them, "You men of Judea, and all you who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

For these aren't drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is only the third hour of the day .

But this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:
17
'It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
18
Yes, and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days, I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy.
19
I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and billows of smoke.
20
The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21
It will be, that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

"Men of Israel, hear these words! Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as you yourselves know,

him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed;
24
whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.
25
For David says concerning him, 'I saw the Lord always before my face, For he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved.
26
Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope;
27
because you will not leave my soul in Hades , neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay.
28
You made known to me the ways of life. You will make me full of gladness with your presence.'

"Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30
Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
31
he foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was his soul left in Hades , nor did his flesh see decay.
32
This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses.
33
Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this, which you now see and hear.

For David didn't ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit by my right hand,
35
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

"Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."
37
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38
Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39
For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself."
40
With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation!"
41
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls.
La vie de la communauté

They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.
43
Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44
All who believed were together, and had all things in common.
45
They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need.
46
Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart,
47
praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved.

Tout à coup il vint du ciel un bruit comme celui d'un vent violent, qui remplit toute la maison où ils étaient assis.

Des langues qui semblaient de feu leur apparurent, séparées les unes des autres, et elles se posèrent sur chacun d'eux.

Ils furent tous remplis du Saint-Esprit et se mirent à parler en d'autres langues, comme l'Esprit leur donnait de s'exprimer.

Or il y avait en séjour à Jérusalem des Juifs, hommes pieux venus de toutes les nations qui sont sous le ciel.

A ce bruit, ils accoururent en foule, et ils furent stupéfaits parce que chacun les entendait parler dans sa propre langue.

Ils étaient [tous] remplis d'étonnement et d'admiration et ils se disaient [les uns aux autres] : « Ces gens qui parlent ne sont-ils pas tous galiléens ?

Comment se fait-il donc que nous les entendions chacun dans notre propre langue, notre langue maternelle ?

Parthes, Mèdes, Elamites, habitants de la Mésopotamie, de la Judée, de la Cappadoce, du Pont, de l'Asie,

de la Phrygie, de la Pamphylie, de l'Egypte, du territoire de la Libye voisine de Cyrène et résidents venus de Rome, Juifs de naissance ou par conversion,
11
Crétois et Arabes, nous les entendons parler dans notre langue des merveilles de Dieu ! »

Tous remplis d'étonnement et ne sachant que penser, ils se disaient les uns aux autres : « Qu'est-ce que cela veut dire ? »

Mais d'autres se moquaient et disaient : « Ils sont pleins de vin doux. »
Le discours de Pierre

Alors Pierre, debout avec les onze apôtres, s'exprima d’une voix forte en ces termes : « Hommes de Judée et vous tous qui séjournez à Jérusalem, comprenez ce qui se passe et prêtez l'oreille à mes paroles !

Ces gens ne sont pas ivres, comme vous le supposez, car il est neuf heures du matin.

Mais maintenant se réalise ce qu'a dit le prophète Joël :

Dans les derniers jours, dit Dieu, je déverserai de mon Esprit sur tout être humain ; vos fils et vos filles prophétiseront, vos jeunes gens auront des visions et vos vieillards auront des rêves.
18
Oui, sur mes serviteurs et sur mes servantes, durant ces jours-là, je déverserai de mon Esprit et ils prophétiseront.
19
Je ferai des prodiges en haut dans le ciel et des signes miraculeux en bas sur la terre : du sang, du feu et une vapeur de fumée ;
20
le soleil se changera en ténèbres et la lune en sang avant l'arrivée du jour du Seigneur, de ce jour grand et glorieux.

Alors toute personne qui fera appel au nom du Seigneur sera sauvée.

» Israélites, écoutez ces paroles ! Dieu vous a désigné Jésus de Nazareth en accomplissant par lui, au milieu de vous, des miracles, des prodiges et des signes, comme vous le savez vous-mêmes.

Cet homme vous a été livré suivant le projet défini et la prescience de Dieu. [Vous l’avez arrêté, ] vous l'avez fait mourir sur une croix par l’intermédiaire d’hommes impies.

Mais Dieu a brisé les liens de la mort, il l'a ressuscité, parce qu'il n'était pas possible qu’elle le retienne.
25
En effet, David dit à propos de lui : Je voyais constamment le Seigneur devant moi, parce qu'il est à ma droite afin que je ne sois pas ébranlé.

C'est pourquoi mon cœur est dans la joie et ma langue dans l'allégresse ; même mon corps reposera avec espérance,
27
car tu n'abandonneras pas mon âme au séjour des morts, tu ne permettras pas que ton saint connaisse la décomposition.
28
Tu m'as fait connaître les sentiers de la vie, tu me rempliras de joie par ta présence.

» Mes frères, qu’il me soit permis de vous parler en toute franchise au sujet du patriarche David : il est mort, il a été enseveli et son tombeau existe encore aujourd'hui parmi nous !

Or il était prophète et il savait que Dieu lui avait juré par serment de faire surgir [le Messie, ] un de ses descendants, pour le faire asseoir sur son trône.

C'est donc la résurrection du Christ qu'il a prévue et annoncée en disant qu'il ne serait pas abandonné au séjour des morts et que son corps ne connaîtrait pas la décomposition.

» C'est ce Jésus que Dieu a ressuscité, nous en sommes tous témoins.

Elevé à la droite de Dieu, il a reçu du Père le Saint-Esprit qui avait été promis et il l'a déversé, comme vous le voyez et l'entendez [maintenant].

David en effet n'est pas monté au ciel, mais il dit lui-même : Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur : ‘Assieds-toi à ma droite

jusqu'à ce que j'aie fait de tes ennemis ton marchepied.’
36
Que toute la communauté d'Israël sache donc avec certitude que Dieu a fait Seigneur et Messie ce Jésus que vous avez crucifié. »

Après avoir entendu ce discours, ils eurent le cœur vivement touché et dirent à Pierre et aux autres apôtres : « Frères, que ferons-nous ? »

Pierre leur dit : « Changez d’attitude et que chacun de vous soit baptisé au nom de Jésus-Christ pour le pardon de vos péchés, et vous recevrez le don du Saint-Esprit.

En effet, la promesse est pour vous, pour vos enfants et pour tous ceux qui sont au loin, en aussi grand nombre que le Seigneur notre Dieu les appellera. »

Et par beaucoup d'autres paroles, il rendait témoignage et les encourageait en disant : « Sauvez-vous de cette génération pervertie ! »

Ceux qui acceptèrent sa parole furent donc baptisés et, ce jour-là, le nombre des disciples augmenta d’environ 3000 personnes.
La vie de la communauté

Ils persévéraient dans l'enseignement des apôtres, dans la communion fraternelle, dans la fraction du pain et dans les prières.

La crainte s'emparait de chacun et il se faisait beaucoup de prodiges et de signes miraculeux par l’intermédiaire des apôtres.
44
Tous ceux qui croyaient étaient ensemble et ils avaient tout en commun.
45
Ils vendaient leurs propriétés et leurs biens et ils en partageaient le produit entre tous, en fonction des besoins.
46
Chaque jour, avec persévérance, ils se retrouvaient d’un commun accord au temple ; ils rompaient le pain dans les maisons et ils prenaient leur nourriture avec joie et simplicité de cœur.
47
Ils louaient Dieu et avaient la faveur de tout le peuple. Le Seigneur ajoutait chaque jour à l’Eglise ceux qui étaient sauvés.
