1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here. I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters,2 with whom the kings of the earth committed sexual immorality, and those who dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her sexual immorality."3 He carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet-colored animal, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns.4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of the sexual immorality of the earth.5 And on her forehead a name was written, "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."6 I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered with great amazement.7 The angel said to me, "Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.8 The beast that you saw was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss and to go into destruction. Those who dwell on the earth and whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel when they see that the beast was, and is not, and shall be present.9 Here is the mind that has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits.10 They are seven kings. Five have fallen, the one is, the other has not yet come. When he comes, he must continue a little while.11 The beast that was, and is not, is himself also an eighth, and is of the seven; and he goes to destruction.12 The ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority as kings, with the beast, for one hour.13 These have one mind, and they give their power and authority to the beast.14 These will war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings. They also will overcome who are with him, called and chosen and faithful."15 He said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages.16 The ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute, and will make her desolate, and will make her naked, and will eat her flesh, and will burn her utterly with fire.17 For God has put in their hearts to do what he has in mind, and to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God should be accomplished.18 The woman whom you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth." -

1 Καὶ ἦλθεν εἷς ἐκ τῶν ἑπτὰ ἀγγέλων τῶν ἐχόντων τὰς ἑπτὰ φιάλας, καὶ ἐλάλησεν μετ’ ἐμοῦ λέγων· Δεῦρο, δείξω σοι τὸ κρίμα τῆς πόρνης τῆς μεγάλης τῆς καθημένης ἐπὶ ὑδάτων πολλῶν,2 μεθ’ ἧς ἐπόρνευσαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἐμεθύσθησαν οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τῆς πορνείας αὐτῆς.3 καὶ ἀπήνεγκέν με εἰς ἔρημον ἐν πνεύματι. καὶ εἶδον γυναῖκα καθημένην ἐπὶ θηρίον κόκκινον, γέμοντα ὀνόματα βλασφημίας, ἔχων κεφαλὰς ἑπτὰ καὶ κέρατα δέκα.4 καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἦν περιβεβλημένη πορφυροῦν καὶ κόκκινον, καὶ κεχρυσωμένη χρυσίῳ καὶ λίθῳ τιμίῳ καὶ μαργαρίταις, ἔχουσα ποτήριον χρυσοῦν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῆς γέμον βδελυγμάτων καὶ τὰ ἀκάθαρτα τῆς πορνείας αὐτῆς,5 καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ μέτωπον αὐτῆς ὄνομα γεγραμμένον, μυστήριον, Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη, ἡ μήτηρ τῶν πορνῶν καὶ τῶν βδελυγμάτων τῆς γῆς.6 καὶ εἶδον τὴν γυναῖκα μεθύουσαν ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν ἁγίων καὶ ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν μαρτύρων Ἰησοῦ. Καὶ ἐθαύμασα ἰδὼν αὐτὴν θαῦμα μέγα·7 καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὁ ἄγγελος· Διὰ τί ἐθαύμασας; ἐγὼ ἐρῶ σοι τὸ μυστήριον τῆς γυναικὸς καὶ τοῦ θηρίου τοῦ βαστάζοντος αὐτήν, τοῦ ἔχοντος τὰς ἑπτὰ κεφαλὰς καὶ τὰ δέκα κέρατα·8 τὸ θηρίον ὃ εἶδες ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν, καὶ μέλλει ἀναβαίνειν ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου, καὶ εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγει· καὶ θαυμασθήσονται οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ὧν οὐ γέγραπται τὸ ὄνομα ἐπὶ τὸ βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, βλεπόντων τὸ θηρίον ὅτι ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν καὶ παρέσται.9 Ὧδε ὁ νοῦς ὁ ἔχων σοφίαν. αἱ ἑπτὰ κεφαλαὶ ἑπτὰ ὄρη εἰσίν, ὅπου ἡ γυνὴ κάθηται ἐπ’ αὐτῶν. καὶ βασιλεῖς ἑπτά εἰσιν·10 οἱ πέντε ἔπεσαν, ὁ εἷς ἔστιν, ὁ ἄλλος οὔπω ἦλθεν, καὶ ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὀλίγον αὐτὸν δεῖ μεῖναι,11 καὶ τὸ θηρίον ὃ ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν. καὶ αὐτὸς ὄγδοός ἐστιν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά ἐστιν, καὶ εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγει.12 καὶ τὰ δέκα κέρατα ἃ εἶδες δέκα βασιλεῖς εἰσιν, οἵτινες βασιλείαν οὔπω ἔλαβον, ἀλλὰ ἐξουσίαν ὡς βασιλεῖς μίαν ὥραν λαμβάνουσιν μετὰ τοῦ θηρίου.13 οὗτοι μίαν γνώμην ἔχουσιν, καὶ τὴν δύναμιν καὶ ἐξουσίαν αὐτῶν τῷ θηρίῳ διδόασιν.14 οὗτοι μετὰ τοῦ ἀρνίου πολεμήσουσιν, καὶ τὸ ἀρνίον νικήσει αὐτούς, ὅτι κύριος κυρίων ἐστὶν καὶ βασιλεὺς βασιλέων, καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί.15 Καὶ λέγει μοι· Τὰ ὕδατα ἃ εἶδες, οὗ ἡ πόρνη κάθηται, λαοὶ καὶ ὄχλοι εἰσὶν καὶ ἔθνη καὶ γλῶσσαι.16 καὶ τὰ δέκα κέρατα ἃ εἶδες καὶ τὸ θηρίον, οὗτοι μισήσουσι τὴν πόρνην, καὶ ἠρημωμένην ποιήσουσιν αὐτὴν καὶ γυμνήν, καὶ τὰς σάρκας αὐτῆς φάγονται, καὶ αὐτὴν κατακαύσουσιν ἐν πυρί·17 ὁ γὰρ θεὸς ἔδωκεν εἰς τὰς καρδίας αὐτῶν ποιῆσαι τὴν γνώμην αὐτοῦ, καὶ ποιῆσαι μίαν γνώμην καὶ δοῦναι τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτῶν τῷ θηρίῳ, ἄχρι τελεσθήσονται οἱ λόγοι τοῦ θεοῦ.18 καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἣν εἶδες ἔστιν ἡ πόλις ἡ μεγάλη ἡ ἔχουσα βασιλείαν ἐπὶ τῶν βασιλέων τῆς γῆς. -

1 Puis un des sept anges qui tenaient les sept coupes vint me parler et dit : « Viens, je te montrerai le jugement de la grande prostituée qui est assise sur les grandes eaux.2 C'est avec elle que les rois de la terre se sont livrés à l’immoralité, et c'est du vin de sa prostitution que les habitants de la terre se sont enivrés. »3 Alors il me transporta en esprit dans un désert et je vis une femme assise sur une bête écarlate, couverte de noms blasphématoires et qui avait sept têtes et dix cornes.4 Cette femme était habillée de pourpre et d'écarlate et parée d'or, de pierres précieuses et de perles. Elle tenait dans sa main une coupe d'or remplie d'abominations et des souillures de sa prostitution.5 Sur son front était écrit un nom, un mystère : « Babylone la grande, la mère des prostituées et des abominations de la terre. »6 Je vis cette femme ivre du sang des saints, du sang des témoins de Jésus. En la voyant, je fus saisi d'un grand étonnement.7 L'ange me dit : « Pourquoi t'étonnes-tu ? Je te dirai le mystère de la femme et de la bête qui la porte, celle qui a les sept têtes et les dix cornes.8 La bête que tu as vue existait et elle n'existe plus. Elle va monter de l'abîme et s’en aller à la perdition. Les habitants de la terre, ceux dont le nom n'a pas été inscrit dès la création du monde dans le livre de vie, s'étonneront en voyant que la bête existait, qu’elle n'existe plus et qu’elle reparaîtra.9 C’est ici qu’il faut une intelligence éclairée par la sagesse. Les sept têtes sont sept montagnes sur lesquelles la femme est assise.10 Ce sont aussi sept rois : cinq sont tombés, l'un règne, l'autre n'est pas encore venu. Et quand il sera venu, il ne doit rester que peu de temps.11 Quant à la bête qui existait et qui n'existe plus, elle est elle-même un huitième roi ; elle fait partie des sept et s’en va à la perdition.12 Les dix cornes que tu as vues sont dix rois qui n'ont pas encore reçu de royaume, mais ils reçoivent le pouvoir de régner pendant une heure avec la bête.13 Ils ont une même pensée et ils donnent leur puissance et leur pouvoir à la bête.14 Ils combattront contre l'Agneau et l'Agneau les vaincra parce qu'il est le Seigneur des seigneurs et le Roi des rois. Ceux qui ont été appelés, choisis et fidèles et sont avec lui les vaincront aussi. »15 Puis il me dit : « Les eaux que tu as vues, sur lesquelles la prostituée est assise, ce sont des peuples, des foules, des nations et des langues.16 Les dix cornes que tu as vues et la bête détesteront la prostituée ; elles la dépouilleront et la mettront à nu, elles mangeront sa chair et la détruiront par le feu.17 En effet, Dieu leur a mis à cœur de réaliser son propre projet en ayant la même pensée et en donnant leur royauté à la bête jusqu'à ce que les paroles de Dieu soient accomplies.18 Et la femme que tu as vue, c'est la grande ville qui exerce la royauté sur les rois de la terre. »
