Le voyant est mis à nouveau en extase, en esprit, comparez Apocalypse 1.10 ; 4.2. Ici commence donc une nouvelle vision. C'est dans le désert qu'il est transporté pour voir Babylone, soit parce que la Babylone de l'Euphrate était située au delà du désert de Syrie, (Esaïe 21.1) soit plutôt parce que ce désert, où elle apparaît au voyant, est un présage du sort qui lui est réservé. (Apocalypse 17.16 ; 18.2,19)

La femme, c'est la Babylone de l'Apocalypse, la ville de Rome. Elle est assise sur une bête écarlate, qui porte ainsi sa livrée. Cette couleur est l'insigne de la domination, (Matthieu 27.28) plutôt que la marque du sang répandu par la bête. (verset 6) La bête, c'est l'empire romain d'après Apocalypse 13.1 La gloire de la ville de Rome repose sur l'empire dont elle est la capitale.

Les noms de blasphèmes déjà mentionnés Apocalypse 13.1 sont indiqués avant les têtes et les cornes, parce qu'ils représentent le crime principal de Rome, pour lequel elle va être punie. (verset 2, note.)

Dans la suite de la vision, (verset 9) il sera expliqué au voyant ce que figurent les sept têtes et les dix cornes.
