Colossiens 1.23

si du moins vous demeurez dans la foi, fondés et fermes, et ne vous laissant pas détourner de l'espérance de l'évangile que vous avez ouï, lequel a été prêché dans toute la création qui est sous le ciel, et duquel moi, Paul, je suis devenu serviteur.

Il y a, entre l'assurance du salut que professe l'apôtre, et cette manière conditionnelle de parler, une contradiction que la logique ordinaire ne peut concilier, mais qui trouve sa pleine justification dans le cœur de l'homme et dans la vie pratique. (Comparer Philippiens 2.12,13, note.)

Quelle que soit l'œuvre de la grâce, la responsabilité de l'homme ne peut jamais cesser ni s'affaiblir. Au contraire, plus le salut est tout entier de Dieu, plus cette responsabilité devient sainte et redoutable. Il y a souvent dans l'homme, même dans l'homme régénéré, un dernier fonds d'indolence et de lâcheté, et chez plusieurs une fausse sécurité, auxquels il faut que la Parole fasse sentir l'aiguillon de la vérité, en répétant fréquemment : "Celui qui persévérera jusqu'à la fin sera sauvé," ou, comme le fait ici l'apôtre : si du moins.

- Le mot ne vous laissant point détourner (Grec : "ébranler de manière à être séparés") montre les effets que l'apôtre attendait de l'action des faux docteurs. L'espérance de l'Evangile est celle que cet Evangile seul donne à l'homme pécheur. (Colossiens 1.5,27 ; Romains 5.2 ; Ephésiens 1.18 ; 3.7)

L'apôtre ajoute ces mots sur son ministère, soit parce qu'il aime à le rappeler comme le plus grand honneur que puisse avoir un homme pécheur, (Ephésiens 3.7,8) soit pour faire sentir aux Colossiens, par opposition aux faux docteurs, qu'il est bien un envoyé de Dieu. C'est dans le même sens qu'il parle de ses souffrances et insiste sur la sainteté et la grandeur de sa vocation apostolique. (verset 24 et suivants)

- Il faut observer ces trois motifs de rester fermes dans la foi à l'Evangile : vous l'avez entendu (vous en êtes responsables) ; il est universel ; Paul, le grand apôtre des gentils, en est le serviteur.
